Final Destination

:::GENRE: HORROR:::

Based on the word GENRE, there are several types of genre in film industry. In the older days, Hollywood film industry had frequently used three types of genres, which are Western, Horror, and Musical genres. Until now, these three genres are still the major choices out from other genres. In today's journal, we are going to talk about horror films. Horror is one of the oldest genres from Hollywood. The productions make edits of framework to bring more frighten and panic feelings. Thus, it invokes the inner hidden fears of audience through the film. In another way, it also entertains and captivate the audience's attention to watch later scenes of the movie film. The subgenres of horror film are unnatural, psychological and semantic genres. In this week's film, Final Destination is categorized as Slasher, Thriller or Supernatural subgenre among all the subgenres in Horror genre.

:::SYNOPSIS:::

Final Destination is a 2000 supernatural American film. It is directed by James Wong, and it is also the first installment in the Final Destination film series. It is actually based on the story of Jeffrey Reddick. In this film, it all started by a scene where a high school student, Alex Browning, boarded VolĂ©e Airlines Flight 180 with his classmates for a senior trip to Paris. Before the airplane started to take off, Alex had a premonition that the airplane will met a functioning failure and explosion will occurred. Only a few of the students and one teacher are convinced to escape the airplane before it actually exploded on the halfway. After a month, the survivors attend a memorial service for the victims. After that, the survivors were slowly dead in different ways, and Alex realized there was a sequential order for every person's death, included his. He managed to save his rival, Carter, and a girl name Clear. After six months, three of them travel to Paris to celebrate their survival, until Alex realized death didn't skipped him. Another serious and "natural" accident happen in front of their eyes. The movie is ended when Carter saved Alex and asked Alex who's next, the sign suddenly swings back down towards Carter.

:::RECAPPED SCENE:::

Based on the topic "Horror", the scene that i would like to recap the most will be the death scene of Alex Browning's teacher, Ms. Valerie Lewton. All of this starts in Ms. Lewton's house. In the starting of the scene, she boiled a kettle of water, and she saw a suspicious dark big shadow beyond her. She started to feel scared since the shadow is so abnormal to appear in a sudden. She tried to warm herself up by filling hot water into a ceramic cup and going to drink it, but she splashed the water away immediately as the cup was written "Mt. Abraham High School" on it, which is the high school of her's. This is because she did not want to get involved or deal with the deaths of the students, and she did not want to think back the past, which is the day when the explosion of airplane happens. She tried to calm herself down by filling two cubes of ice and fill some vodka into the cup. Based on basic science theory, a sudden change of temperature in a ceramic cup will caused cracking. Holding the ceramic cup, she walked towards the computer to switch on it, caused the vodka dripped into the monitor and touched the electric component in it. But before this, as Ms. Lewton walked the vodka drip onto the floor and formed into traces. When she put the cup away and started to pack her things, she heard a slight electric shock from the computer, until she walk towards the computer and get shot by the shrapnel of the computer. She plucked the shrapnel away from her neck, and the neck kept bleeding. She slipped, and fell on the floor. She tried to get a cloth which was hung on the knives holder with full of knives. Unluckily, all the knives fell too, and one of the knives was stabbed right in the center of her chest, but not too deep. Until Alex came to her house and try to save her, yet the knife was stabbed more deeply as one of the furniture fell onto her.

            To relate the recapped scene with the topic “Horror”, I think that Valerie Lewton’s death is more horrifying compared to others. The mise-en-scene shown in this scene are well-defined to send the message of their film, which is horror, to the audiences.  Before she get into the risk of death, her actions do show the audience about the intense and frightening feeling (emotion and mindset). The actions can be seen on the reactions of Ms. Lewton towards the unknown shadow and the cup of hot water. Her facial expressions in these acts are showing frights and panic. Next, the bloody scene is said to be one of the most memorable scenes in this whole movie film, because it shows too much blood on that scene. The scene starts from when the shrapnel of the computer is shot to the neck of Ms. Lewton, until her death caused by the deepen knife.

:::TO CONCLUDE:::

            As a conclusion of this review journal, horror is well-known as one of the successful, long term, and favored genre among others. Why is it famous although it’s content is too horrifying to be published and soon watch by the audiences? The reason that horror genre can maintain in a stable position in the genres is mostly because of the semantic and syntactic approach. And of course, the mise-en-scene, especially make-up, lighting, settings and actor’s movements or facial expression, play a big role in every horror film, which also cause them to spend more time on the preproduction, production and post-production. At the same time, Final Destination is a good example of horror film that must be watched by many other audiences, as it is one of the famous horror movie film until now.
